In a recent AMC interview, J.J. Abrams was asked about Bill Shatner being upset over being left out of the “reboot” of the Star Trek movie franchise.
Abrams responded that they had originally had a part for The Shat but that he didn’t want to do a cameo. His Royal Shatness “wanted the movie to focus on him significantly.”
While J.J. Abrams does, in fact, think Bill deserves that sort of treatment, he couldn’t do that and respect the canon of the Start Trek universe.

I don’t know if it was intentional or not, but I like the idea of referring to the new prequel movie as “Start Trek.”
