Actually Nick Fury predates Snake Plissken by almost twenty years. The character was first introduced in 1963 as Sgt Nick Fury in "Sgt Fury and His Howling Commandos" which legend holds that Stan Lee felt he was at the top of his game after Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, and the Incredible Hulk and bet Jack Kirby that he could come up with the most ridiculous title and still have it be successful. Kirby had to pay up. Sgt Fury was successful enough, but they decided to "update" the character into the mid-60's to cash in on the James Bond craze.
Then they found various ways of keeping Nick Fury a relatively fit 40-ish for the next forty years.
Then they revamped the character into the "Ultimate Nick Fury" based on Samuel L. Jackson.... dammit!
