“Must See TV” Promo Material

From the 1998-1999 television season on NBC, this material was a part of an extensive packet given to those who attended the affiliate convention that year. test2

They used a section of the famous color bars test pattern to theme together the promo packets (attendees were also given shirts, hats, mugs, etc. with the multi-colored stripe emblazened on all the SWAG)… and almost immediately regretted the choice. Using only a small portion of the color bars made people think not of the test pattern (or even of the NBC peacock which shares the same colors), but of a rainbow. And the rainbow is a symbol commonly used in the gay community. And though the NBC brass was progressive enough to use it in material distributed to affiliates, they were homophobic enough to not use it on any publicly available advertising campaign.

the cover of the "new shows" section of the packet... I didn't find any of the one sheets for the new shows worth saving, but the cover looked interesting

I thought this " one sheet" (the industry name for a consise release of this kind, typically issued to members of the media or for network personnel who promote the product)

I thought this "one sheet" (the industry name for a consise release of this kind, typically issued to members of the media or for network personnel who promote the product) was unique because it includes Phil Hartman in the picture, even though he had been killed prior to the affiliate convention... perhaps Andy Dick looks grumpy in the photograph because he realized he was partly responsible

With "Seinfeld" gone, "Frasier" became the signature sitcom for NBC. It was multi-camera and filmed in front of a live studio audience... how quaint

I would have included the "Homicide" one-sheet, but I gave it to a woman years ago. She was a fan of the series, and I thought the gift would help me seal the deal. For all the "L&O" fans out there, this one sheet as from what most believe to have been the prime of the series

I like the one sheet for NBC.com... when you think about it, they were really ambitious 10-years-ago, particularly with "Homicide: Second Shift," which was a sort of choose-your-own-adventure series utilizing video clips
